Clear mission
CLEAR develops the next generation of
debris removal solutions at ClearSpace
The CLEAR (Clearing the LEO Environment with Active Removal) mission is a pioneering initiative led by ClearSpace in partnership with the UK Space Agency. Its primary objective is to enhance space sustainability by actively removing defunct satellites from low Earth orbit (LEO)
Clearing the way for the future of space exploration
The mission aims to remove two UK-registered derelict satellites from LEO, preventing potential collisions and contributing to a safer orbital environment. This effort not only addresses the immediate challenge of space debris but also paves the way for the UK to develop a fully operational in-orbit servicing capability.
By demonstrating the ability to design, build, test, license, launch, and operate such missions domestically, the UK positions itself as a leader in space sustainability.

CLEAR
Mission
Following the successful completion of the Preliminary Design Review, a consortium led by ClearSpace has been driving forward the next phase of innovation with the successful completion of the Phase 2 technology derisking stage. During this critical phase, key technologies essential for mission success were matured and validated, reinforcing the consortium’s commitment to pioneering space sustainability. With a robust mission design and the support of a UK centric consortium, we are poised to support the UK Space Agency's ambitions for a cleaner and more sustainable orbital environment, setting new standards for responsible space operations.
Dr Paul Bate, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency, said: “As our reliance on space technologies increases rapidly and the UK becomes a global hub of satellite design, manufacturing and launch, we are committed to leading efforts to make space more sustainable. With 1,700 satellites launched last year alone, the need to safeguard the space environment for the benefit of everyone on Earth has never been more pressing.
By catalysing investment, backing innovative new technologies and supporting a national mission to remove space debris, we can keep space open for future generations and protect the important satellite services that modern life depends on.”
The UK Space Agency aims to boost UK prosperity, understand the Universe, and protect our planet and outer space. An Executive Agency of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the Agency’s role is to
catalyse investment to advance space-based technology and maximise UK space sector growth;
deliver missions and capabilities that responsibly meet national needs and advance our understanding of the Universe; and
champion the power of space to inspire people, offer greener, smarter solutions and support a sustainable future.

Mission partners
The CLEAR mission is supported by a strong consortium of UK-based and international partners, including Alden Legal, Critical Software UK, Indra-Deimos UK, Orbit Fab UK, Plextek and Spirit Aerosystems. These collaborations are instrumental in developing state-of-the-art space technologies, such as complex robotics and AI-based algorithms, within the UK.
